Hours: Flexible shifts, typically 3–4 hours per week or fortnightly

Castlemaine Art Museum (CAM) is one of regional Victoria’s most significant public art museums. Founded in 1913 and located on Dja Dja Wurrung Country, CAM has been supported by its community for more than a century.

About the Role
Volunteer Visitor Experience Officers are the public face of CAM. Working alongside staff and fellow volunteers, you’ll help create a welcoming, friendly and safe environment for visitors while gaining hands-on experience in a working museum.
This role is ideal for:
- University students or recent graduates (arts, humanities, museum studies, education, communications)
- People interested in galleries, museums, cultural organisations or community engagement
- Anyone who enjoys working with people and being part of cultural life
Volunteers are supported by CAM staff and provided with training and mentoring.
Key Responsibilities
Visitor Experience
- Welcome visitors and provide information about exhibitions, programs and the Museum
- Answer basic enquiries in person and by phone
- Assist with visitor wayfinding and accessibility needs
- Support a positive, inclusive and respectful gallery environment
Gallery Operations
- Assist with opening and closing procedures
- Help monitor gallery spaces to ensure artworks and visitors are safe
- Observe and report any issues to staff
- Assist with simple retail transactions
- Help maintain a tidy and welcoming shop space
- Share information about CAM memberships and events
Programs & Events
- Assist during exhibition openings, public programs and special events
- Support set-up and pack-down as required
Applicants should be able to demonstrate:
- An interest in art, culture, museums or community spaces
- Friendly, approachable communication skills
- A willingness to engage with people from diverse backgrounds
- Reliability and a professional attitude
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Comfort learning basic systems and procedures (training provided)
- Availability to volunteer on a regular basis
Desirable but not essential:
- Current study or interest in arts, humanities, education or related fields
- Previous customer service, retail or volunteering experience
Pre-engagement Checks
A Working with Children Check (WWCC) will be required unless exemptions apply.
